Community comes first as new development opens at Mayfield

The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is pleased to announce the official opening of new supported accommodation and affordable housing facilities at Mayfield on Wednesday 30th July 2014.

Centrally located at Mayfield, the development offers 22 brand new one, two and three bedroom units for single, double or family occupancy at affordable rates; along with two supported accommodation homes.

Bishop Bill Wright says he is proud of the Diocese’s diverse approach in seeking to provide the community with more services to meet their needs:

“In keeping with Catholic teaching and long-established practice, our diocese strives to assist and support people in the community who have special needs or vulnerabilities as we contribute to building a harmonious and inclusive society.”

“Managed by CatholicCare Social Services Hunter-Manning, our accommodation at Mayfield aims to provide a dedicated care service within a residential setting that is a good home and community for all who choose to live here,” Bishop Wright said.

Alongside the two supported accommodation homes sit 22 new affordable housing units. Using the government’s National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) framework, the units are offered to low to middle income earners who may struggle to pay market rental.

Vice Chancellor of Administration, Sean Scanlon said the development itself was constructed specifically to encourage a ‘community feel’:

“Throughout the process, we have focussed on making this space a home where people are encouraged to interact with one another, not just another housing development. By building around a central village green, and including common facilities like barbeques and seating we hope those who live here will use this space as their own,” Mr Scanlon said.

The site will be officially opened in a short ceremony, followed by a welcome barbeque for residents on Wednesday 30th July 2014.
