Ordination of Bishop William Wright (1952 - 2021)

Bishop Bill Wright died on 13 November 2021.  In late November 2021, Father Greg Barker was appointed as the Diocesan Administrator until a new bishop is appointed by the Holy Father, Pope Francis.

Bishop William Wright was ordained eighth bishop of Maitland-Newcastle during a grand liturgy at Sacred Heart Cathedral on 15 June, 2011.

The ceremony was rich with symbolism. After Cardinal Pell, each of the bishops laid hands on Bishop-elect Bill's head, the prayer of consecration was prayed while the book of gospels was held over him.

The liturgy was attended by hundreds of people at the cathedral including bishops, clergy, parishioners, children and principals from Catholic primary and high schools, diocesan leaders, staff, Bishop Bill's family and friends, Anglican Bishop Brian Farran and Lord Mayor of Newcastle Councillor John Tate.

Hundreds also watched a live video stream of the ordination online or from projector screens at adjoining venues because the church was filled to capacity.
