Statement from Bishop Bill Wright on the trial of Vince Ryan

'Yesterday afternoon I was advised that, on the first day of his trial, Vincent Gerard Ryan pleaded guilty to three of the six child sexual assault charges he was facing at the Downing Centre Sydney.

Whilst a small consolation, I am grateful that Ryan's victim and others were spared the ordeal of a trial. Ryan's past crimes continue to throw a dark shadow onto the Diocese's present and I am terribly saddened that there is yet another child whose innocence was robbed by the sins of this man.

I will not make any further comment on this, as I now take counsel as to how the Diocese should respond to Ryan's admissions.'
