Catholic secondary students to celebrate stage and screen in this week's musical showcase

In its eleventh year, over 500 students from the 11 secondary Catholic schools across the Hunter, will take to the Civic Theatre stage this Thursday for the annual diocesan musical showcase, Diosounds.

Student musicians from as far as Taree and Aberdeen will travel to Newcastle to perform on stage in both the matinee and night show performances in front of more than 3000 people.

"Broadway Melodies and Hollywood Harmonies" is this year's theme and features performances made famous on stage and screen. The show features scenes from Broadway shows Mama Mia!, Dirty Dancing and Matilda, and songs from films such as La La Land, Sister Act 2 and Pitch Perfect.

With some new additions to the show, Diosounds will feature a more contemporary and visually engaging stage than in previous years, making full use of intelligent lighting and floating stages. Schools are also incorporating traditional orchestral instruments this year with a contemporary flare in their performances.

"For the past 11 years, the secondary music teachers from across the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle have worked collaboratively to present a musical extravaganza featuring the talents of students in their respective schools," says Michelle Burgess, Creative and Performing Arts Coordinator of All Saints College, St Peter's Campus, Maitland.

"Each school has been learning and rehearsing since the start of the school year in preparation for this annual showcase and will no doubt provide entertaining and energetic performances."
