World Youth Day

World Youth Day (WYD) is a gathering of millions of young people who come together in a chosen host city, from places across the world; to celebrate their faith in the name of Jesus Christ.

The first official World Youth Day was initiated by St John Paul 11 and held in 1986 in Rome. Since then it has become not just a single day but a whole week of festivities, fun, fellowship and spiritual enrichment which culminates in the celebration of the Eucharist on the final day.

World Youth Day has attracted many young Australians Pilgrims from the Diocese of Maitland- Newcastle who have experienced the festival in Sydney, Rio and Krakow. Pilgrims to WYD have become not only a witness to the people of the host city as they gather peacefully for their faith, but also a sign of hope for the whole world. The next World Youth Day will be held in Lisbon, Portugal in 2023 Click here for the latest information about World Youth Day:
