DioSounds Celebrates Catholic School Music

For the first time in almost 10 years, students from all eleven diocesan secondary schools will showcase their talents on the same stage.

Over 300 students from 11 Catholic secondary schools in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, the Hunter and Manning will take centre stage at the Civic Theatre next week for an evening of music: from classical to contemporary rock, from musical theatre hits to original compositions.

DioSounds will include performances from singers, instrumentalists, choirs and bands.

According to event organiser and music teacher at St Mary’s High School Gateshead, Mr Stephen Walter, “We’re really looking forward to a wonderful night’s entertainment. We hope students will have a positive school experience that is challenging and lots of fun. Their performance skills and ability to think quickly and work as a team have certainly developed throughout the rehearsal process.”

Schools participating in DioSounds are St Francis Xavier’s College, Hamilton; St Mary’s High School, Gateshead; St Catherine’s Catholic College, Singleton; All Saints College St Peter’s Campus, Maitland; All Saints College St Mary’s Campus, Maitland; All Saints College St Joseph’s Campus, Lochinvar; San Clemente High School, Mayfield; St Paul’s High School, Booragul; St Clare’s High School, Taree and St Pius X High School, Adamstown.

“We’re very proud of the many talented musicians within our schools,” said Mr Ray Collins, Director of Schools, “and the dedicated music staff who passionately nurture the students’ development.”

“Music is such a significant dimension in many of our lives, particularly for young people. We’re always pleased to recognise and celebrate the gift of music in our schools,” Mr Collins said.

The initiative for DioSounds came from diocesan music teachers’ desire to highlight the students’ abilities in a professional setting for the community to enjoy.

DioSounds is on Wednesday 17 June at 6.30pm at the Civic Theatre. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children and can be purchased through Ticketek.

Newcastle City Council is a key event sponsor.
