Bishop offers support to bushfire victims

As we face the reality that the death toll from the bushfires in Victoria continues to rise, I
would like to offer our prayers and support for those who have lost loved ones in Australia’s
worst natural disaster.

My heart goes out to the children who have lost their parents, to the parents who have lost
their children, to brothers and sisters lost, and to those people whose loved ones are still
missing.

The bushfire battle has extended to hospital wards where our prayers are with those severely
burnt victims who are fighting for their lives.

I too, have been personally touched by these tragic events. My brother-in-law is one of many
who have lost their homes. He had been preparing to mark the first anniversary of my sister’s
death and now he has also lost his home.

The community spirit that has grown out of the devastation is to be commended including the
work of volunteers such as the Rural Fire Service, Red Cross and other emergency
authorities.

With fires still burning, we pray for those who are still yet to face their biggest hurdle.

With hundreds of people now homeless with their personal treasures, animals and other
belongings nothing more than a memory, I urge people to do their part to assist. While it
won’t bring back loved ones, every little bit helps at this difficult time.

Donations to the Victorian Bushfire Disaster Appeal can be made through the St Vincent de
Paul website: www.vinnies.org.au
