Local Leaders Join Forces to Host the World

In just over 100 days, about 5000 young people between the ages of 16 and 35 will arrive in Newcastle for five days before heading to Sydney for World Youth Day 08.

The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is hosting the pilgrims from about 30 countries representing all continents as part of a World Youth Day tradition called “Days in the Diocese”.

Speaking yesterday at a World Youth Day briefing, State Member for Newcastle Jodi McKay said, “Days in the Diocese is a great opportunity to showcase all that our region has to offer and to support the diocese in hosting our overseas visitors.”

The briefing was convened by Ms McKay and was attended by local representatives from government, business, transport, police, health, tourism and Newcastle and Port Stephens Councils.

Recognising the great potential for community involvement and the need for logistical support and infrastructure, Ms McKay recommended the establishment of an Advisory Committee involving all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the event is “run smoothly, safely and is a great success. It will benefit our community in so many ways. We should all work together to make the most of it.”

Newcastle’s Lord Mayor, Cr John Tate has expressed support for Days in the Diocese. “Our city has a great deal to offer visitors with a reputation for hospitality and genuine warmth, boasting a spectacular natural environment and a tremendous range of recreational and cultural facilities and attractions to enjoy.”

According to Catholic Bishop Michael Malone, “Our aim for Days in the Diocese is to engage young people and give them an experience of faith, fun and friendship. As you can imagine, this is a massive logistical event and we would be very grateful for all the support you can offer.”

“In my role as leader of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, I have come to appreciate the generosity, support and commitment of our local businesses, organisations and individuals. That is why I feel able to appeal to you for your practical support in making Days in the Diocese a wonderful experience.”
