Local Girls Promote Local Justice
Local Justice is a charity benefit concert being held at Newcastle Panthers this Saturday, 18 November.
All funds raised from the event will go directly to Father Chris Riley’sYouth off the Streetsand Caritas Australia, two prominent Catholic social justice and welfare agencies.
Melbourne pop-punk band Stealing O’Neal will be the headline act, with other performances by Short Stack, Ponderonit, None So Far, Vapour Trail, Vinyl Craze, Colobus Antics, Rooms 24, Kurst and King of Hearts.
Local Justiceis the brainchild of Jessica Oriel and Danika Weller, Year 11 students from St Paul’s High School Booragul. After learning about the plight of Third World communities at a Caritas “Just Leadership” Day earlier this year, the girls were moved to action.
“We saw photographs showing how children and their parents were living. This made us want to make a difference somehow and we thought that by running a charity event we could donate money to the organisations that help others,” Jessica said.
According to Danika, “We are two local school girls just trying to make a difference in an issue that is close to us. We also love the music and talent that is produced locally and is becoming bigger and better than ever.”
The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, through the Diocesan Pastoral Support Unit and the Catholic Schools Office, is supporting Jessica and Danika. Recognising the justice of the cause, Newcastle Panthershave willingly lent their support along with The Drum Shopand Astara Recording Studios.
Concert tickets cost $15 and can be purchased in advance either from Newcastle Panthers or directly from the bands. Tickets will also be available at the door.
