Pope Calls Worldwide Synod of Bishops on Eucharist

Pope John Paul II has convoked a worldwide Synod of Bishops to reflect on the Eucharist.

To be held in October 2005 in Rome, the Synod will involve representatives of the world’s bishops’ conferences. Representing Australia’s bishops will be Bishop Chris Toohey of Wilcannia-Forbes and Archbishop Adrian Doyle of Hobart.

The leaders of the Roman Curia will also be invited to participate, and the Pope can name other individuals - male, female, lay or cleric - to join in the discussions.

All together, there will be about 200 active participants in the Synod. A preparatory document outlining the topics of the Synod’s discussions, called the lineamenta, has been circulated to the world’s bishops’ conferences.
