Put a $ to Work for the Unemployed: Bishops
“Put a dollar to work and help put more people into work,” the Hunter Region’s Anglican and Catholic Bishops are urging members of the community.

Catholic Bishop Michael Malone and Anglican Bishop Roger Herft will launch the Two Bishops Trust’s annual Put a Dollar to Work fundraising campaign next Tuesday 14th September at a corporate luncheon.

Throughout September members of the community can make a gold-coin donation at any branch of the Newcastle Permanent Building Society in the Hunter Region and help provide local job opportunities for the region’s long-term unemployed.

According to the bishops, “all of us have a part to play in finding solutions”.

“Decisions on unemployment, like all economic decisions, should not be left to the sole judgement of groups possessing economic power, or of the political community alone.

“We bishops believe that the Churches have a right and an obligation to speak out on the realities of unemployment.

“In attempting to address the national disaster of unemployment, we must reject as morally wrong the notion that a certain level of unemployment is acceptable or necessary for a competitive economy.

“The Trust upholds the view that every citizen is entitled to a life of dignity. Every citizen is entitled to a job or a vocation,” the bishops said.

Established in 1998, the Two Bishops Trust aims to inspire and unite the whole community to find workable, just and creative solutions to unemployment in the Hunter Region.
