Lake Macquarie Two Bishops Trust Project
Receives Federal Support
The
Two Bishops Trust has secured funding for an innovative project
that aims to provide employment opportunities for two disadvantaged
Lake Macquarie communities.
The Windale
and Booragul/Bolton Point Shed Project will see the creation of
two mens sheds providing a valuable community space where
young people can receive mentoring and training from skilled retired
or unemployed local residents.
This project
is supported by funding from the Commonwealth Government under
its Regional Assistance Programme, administered by the Department
of Transport and Regional Services. This project is also supported
by the Hunter Area Consultative Committee.
The Mens
Shed Project will draw on the skills of mature aged residents
of Windale, Booragul and Bolton Point who have experience in areas
as diverse as motor mechanics, steel and metal fabrication and
furniture making. A high number of these residents have retired,
been made redundant or are recipients of a disability pension.
In addition
to providing a training outlet to youth, in linking young people
with older residents, the project will encourage greater understanding
between generations.
The
project will encourage members of each community to develop a
sense of ownership for the project with room for community input
at all levels, said Two Bishops Trust Project Worker Bill
Palmer.
In providing
an avenue for young people to develop pre-vocational skills in
fabrication and light manufacturing, the project aims to inspire
and encourage young people to improve their literacy and numeracy
skills. These skills make access to vocational training and employment
possible.
Currently,
youth unemployment in both areas is approximately 46% and low
literacy and numeracy rates are proving a barrier to employment
and training.
The Shed will
also provide a venue for a number of other mens programs
that will address personal development, health and wellbeing.
The Two Bishops
Trust, a collaborative venture between the Hunter's Catholic and
Anglican Churches, aims to inspire and unite the whole community
in finding workable, just and creative solutions to unemployment.
