St Dominic's Student Runner Up in Statewide
Christmas Card Competition
Liam
Kwawegan, a Year Three student from Mayfield's St Dominic's Centre
for Hearing Impaired Children, was this week awarded runner-up
in the 10th annual Northcott Christmas Card Competition.
More than
7000 primary and high school students representing 169 schools
throughout New South Wales entered the competition judged this
year by Reg Mombassa, Mambo cartoonist and "Mental As Anything"
band member.
Sharni Thompson,
a class-mate of Liam's, was also placed in the final 80 entries.
Each year,
The Northcott Society's Christmas Card Competition invites all
children of school age in NSW to design the front of a Christmas
card. Entry is free and is offered as an opportunity for teachers
to discuss disability issues in the classroom.
Ms Frances
Belcher, St Dominic's Principal, said that a number of students
at the Centre were gifted artists and that students were encouraged
to work with mixed mediums, colours and textures. In previous
years students from St Dominic's have been successful in the competition.
St Dominic's
Centre enrols students who are deaf and hearing impaired from
the Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Newcastle, Maitland and Manning
areas in early intervention, transition, primary and high school
programs.
St Dominic's
is the only education centre in NSW that offers a single campus
facility for deaf and hearing impaired students.
A selection
of designs from this year's competition will be used as the creative
design for The Northcott Society's 2004 Christmas Card range.
Background
Note: December 3 is the International Day of People with a
Disability.
