St Dominic's Students' Artwork on Display
in Mayfield Shop Front
Twenty
students from St Dominic's Centre for Hearing Impaired Children
in Mayfield recently launched a large shop front art installation
tracing the history of their school.
The artwork,
displayed in the former Darrell Lea Shop in Maitland Road, Mayfield,
was created by students ranging in age from 5 to 15 under the
supervision of local artist Mr Charles Jordan.
Mr Jordan
explained: "The artwork combines the talents of Kindergarten
through to Year 10 students and explores the history of the School
for the Hearing Impaired, established in Waratah in 1886."
"The
artwork features an impressive cardboard reconstruction of the
original 1890's school building and life size human figures illustrating
the personalities and events associated with the history of the
school building including a visit by Helen Keller in 1948.
"The
project is a combined initiative of Mayfield Main Street, Newcastle
City Council and the University of Newcastle's Department of Leisure
and Tourism.
"In the
lead up to Heritage Week 2003, a number of Mayfield schools will
create a shop front illustration, each celebrating different aspects
of Mayfield's colourful history. The project will culminate with
the creation of a walking trail incorporating the historic sites
of Mayfield and an illustrated pamphlet which will serve as a
guide.
