Sporting Identities to Present Awards to Primary School Sporting Achievers
Next Tuesday afternoon December 3, the sporting achievements of Catholic Primary School students from the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter and Manning areas will be acknowledged during a liturgical celebration at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Hamilton.

About 300 people, including students, teachers, principals, families, friends and diocesan representatives will gather for the liturgy and award presentation.

In particular, the celebration aims to recognise and congratulate primary school students who have represented the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle in a variety of sports at Polding (Northern NSW area) and NSW Primary School Sporting Association area level. In total, 120 students will receive awards.

For the first time this year special awards will be presented to students who have represented NSW at national titles.

The students will receive awards in a variety of sports including Athletics, Swimming, Diving, Cross Country, Netball, Soccer, Cricket, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Basketball, Softball, Hockey, Touch, Tennis, Australian Football League and Golf.

Special guests who will present awards to students during the liturgy will include:

  • Michael Bowman, Director of Catholic Schools
  • Mr Ray Hanley, Primary Schools Consultant, Catholic Schools Office
  • Lisa Keightley, Australian Womens’ Cricket
  • Dominic Marsh, NSW Womens’ Cricket Coach
  • Tonny Jensen, Australian Basketball
  • Martin Kelly, Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist (Judo)
  • Kimberlee Gilmour, Sydney Swifts, NSW Netball
  • Representative TBC, Newcastle Knights
  • Joey Schirrippa, Newcastle United Soccer
  • Adam Hughes, Newcastle United Soccer
  • Greg Hulme, NSW Rugby Union

Ms Lisa Keightley, Australian Womens’ Cricket representative, will give an address to the students on behalf of those athletes presenting the awards.

The ceremony will take place from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesday 3rd December 2002 at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hamilton. Sacred Heart Cathedral is located at 827 Hunter Street Newcastle West.
