Concerned Hunter Identities Join Forces
in Fight Against Unemployment
A group of concerned Hunter identities will gather today at Energy
Australia Stadium to rally the community in the fight against
the growing problem of unemployment in the Hunter region.
Those gathered
will include Mr Gary Kennedy, Secretary of Newcastle Trades Hall
Council; the Most Reverend Michael Malone, Catholic Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle;
the Right Reverend Roger Herft, Anglican Bishop of Newcastle;
Mrs Margaret McNaughton, former Lady Mayoress and tireless community
worker; and Newcastle Knights players Billy Peden and Matt Parsons.
Billy Peden
and Matt Parsons will speak with Gary Kennedy about the issues
of unemployment and training that affect them as professional
sports people.
This gathering
will also launch the Two Bishops Trust Festival of Sharing for
2002.
Held annually,
the Festival of Sharing aims to generate a greater awareness of
unemployment, and offers the community a chance to become involved
in creating solutions.
This year's
Festival campaign - "Put a Dollar to Work" - challenges the community
to get involved by raising funds to assist the Trust's Windale,
Booragul, Bolton Point, Muswellbrook and Cessnock projects.
Celebrating
its fourth anniversary in 2002, the Two Bishops Trust is a collaborative
venture between the Hunter's Catholic and Anglican Churches. The
Trust aims to inspire and unite the whole community in finding
workable, just and creative solutions to unemployment.
During the
month long Festival of Sharing (30 August and 29 September), donations
to assist the work of the Trust can be made at all branches of
the Newcastle Permanent Building Society.
