2002

1st February 2002
Catholic Education Community is 'Called to Mission'
To coincide with the commencement of the 2002 school year, approximately 300 teachers and staff from Catholic schools in the Newcastle, Hunter and Manning areas will gather with Bishop Michael Malone, priests of the diocese and other diocesan personnel next Tuesday (5 February) for a special Mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral.

The Mass will commission all staff from schools in the diocese; welcome newly appointed permanent staff members; recognise those of 25 years service; and acknowledge those receiving the inaugural Monsignor Frank Coolahan Award for Excellence in Schooling.

Mr Michael Bowman, Director of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle said: "Our Called to Mission Mass is an important occasion for our Catholic education system. Through it we come together to commit ourselves to the service of our school communities for 2002. It is for us a celebration of the positive things we hope to achieve during the coming year."

In the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, the Catholic Schools Office (CSO) co-ordinates the operation of 49 primary schools and 11 secondary schools, providing educational facilities for approximately 17,000 children and adolescents. The CSO employs 1047 teachers and 334 support staff.

The Called to Mission Mass will be held on Tuesday 5 February in the Sacred Heart Cathedral commencing at 6:30 pm.

A light supper will be served afterwards.
