Caritas Australia responds to Goma volcano disaster
Caritas Australia has made an immediate contribution of US$20,000 to assist those affected by last week's eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in the Congolese town of Goma. United Nations officials estimate 45 people were killed by the eruption. It will be some time, however before an accurate death toll can be established.

Caritas Australia partners in Goma and Rwanda have made an immediate appeal for sheeting, blankets, tents, food and cooking utensils. They are now carrying out a more detailed assessment of the needs of those affected.

The situation in Goma is particularly urgent, as the population that fled the lava flows has begun to return to the city, unwilling to stay in Rwandan refugee camps. Further eruptions of the volcano have not yet been ruled out.

Up to 80% of Goma was destroyed by the volcano, which led to the flight of hundreds of thousands of refugees to the neighbouring Rwandan town of Gisenyi. Tens of thousands of these people began to return to Goma on Sunday. The refugees appear reluctant to accept help from Rwanda, which has given military backing to Congolese rebels.

The returnees have to walk across cooled lava flows that have formed a thin crust. Aid workers report that these people simply begin to run if the ground becomes too hot. The families returning from Gisenyi, are hungry, thirsty and weak. Some driven to desperation by thirst have sought relief by drinking from Lake Kivu despite fears that lava may have poisoned its waters.

Caritas Australia has a long-standing relationship with Caritas Goma, having for several years supported with emergency relief and medical supplies programs people affected by the conflict in this area. Caritas Australia has provided emergency relief materials and medical supplies. Caritas Australia contributions to the current emergency will be directed through local partners.

Caritas Australia's Africa Program Coordinator, Wendy Ngoma is currently in the region, and will provide regular reports about the evolving crisis.

Australians are asked to respond by sending donations to Caritas Australia.

Donations to those affected by the volcano can be made on 1800 024 413, at www.caritas.org.au, or can be sent to 19 MacKenzie Street, North Sydney, 2060.
