St Columban's Primary Mayfield Wins Physical
and Health Education Award
This Tuesday morning (27 October) St Columban's Primary School,
Mayfield will be presented with an award recognising the school's
accomplishments in the area of physical and health education.
St Columban's is one of six schools across NSW to be selected
for an award by the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education
and Recreation (ACHPER) and is winner of the Whole School K-6
Physical and Health Education category.
ACHPER (NSW) runs the awards as part of Physical and Health Education
Week each year in order to recognise exemplary programs that exist
in the education sector and to help raise the profile of this
subject area.
According to Carol James (Executive Director of ACHPER, NSW),
"We are presenting five other awards which recognise school
and community-based health education, physical education, sporting
or recreation programs. Our motto is 'to promote healthy lifestyles'
and we realise that there are a number of means by which this
can be achieved."
The award was selected by a committee consisting of secondary,
tertiary education and community representatives from ACHPER.
School Principal Mr Michael Doyle said: "The judges were
impressed with many facets of our program including the contribution
to various university studies associated with children's fitness,
respiratory problems and air pollution studies, launching Asthma
Week in the Hunter, Red Cross Breakfast Club, weekly swimming
programs, gross motor skills programs and winter sports clinics."
As well as the honour of the award St Columban's Primary School
will receive a $200 voucher for teaching resources and/or sporting
equipment.
Ms Carol James will visit St Columban's Primary School, Church
Street Mayfield this Tuesday 27 October to present the school
with its award at 11am. All media welcome.
