Marist Brothers Celebrate 100 Years of Service
in Hunter
The Most Reverend Michael Malone, Catholic Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, will preside at a Mass celebrating 100 years of the presence of the Marist Brothers in the Hunter Region tomorrow evening (Friday 11 September).
Bishop Malone will be joined by the Brothers of the Hamilton Community and a number of visiting Marist Brothers, former students and teachers and others who have enjoyed an association with 'the Brothers'.
A feature of the Mass, to be held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Hamilton from 7.30pm, will be a dramatic presentation of the "Marist Story" which begins in revolutionary France and traces the Marists' arrival 'down under', and eventual establishment of a number of schools in the Hunter.
Students from St Francis Xavier's College will be involved in this dramatic presentation.
Marist Provincial Br Michael Hill will present to the diocese a processional cross made for the occasion as a memento of the centenary. The cross will be used for worship in the Cathedral and will be received and blessed by Bishop Malone.
The Marist Brothers Centenary Dinner will also be held on Saturday 12 September, 7.30pm at the University of Newcastle Function Centre . For information about the dinner contact Sue Maloney on Ph: (02) 4961 2863.
All are welcome to join in these centenary celebrations. Sacred Heart Cathedral is located at 841 Hunter Street Newcastle West.
