Former Catholic Education Office Site to
be Developed
The Trustees of the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle announced today that the former Catholic Education Office site, bounded by Tyrrell, Church, Wolfe and Perkins Streets Newcastle, would be developed in conjunction with the Stronach Group for residential living.
The land was re-zoned to residential in September 1997 with a Development Control Plan (DCP) No. 48 setting development guidelines.
Since the re-zoning, the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle has been reviewing all options for the land, and following a thorough tender process, the Stronach Group was selected as the development partner.
For over 75 years the Stronach Group has been well known and respected in Newcastle and continues to be a leader in the local building and construction industry.
The EJE group has been selected as project architects and the proposal, as developed to date, has been discussed with Newcastle City Council Officers, together with local residents group representatives. Newcastle City Councillors will be briefed.
It is expected that a development application (DA) for approximately 49 high quality two and three bedroom residences with on-site parking will be lodged with Newcastle City Council in October and following DA approval, construction could commence in early 1999. The proposal as developed to date generally meets the DCP guidelines.
It is hoped that this collaborative venture between two local organisations will provide employment opportunities for people of the Hunter and assist Newcastle City Council in enticing residents back to inner city living.
Commenting on the proposal Diocesan Business Manager Mr John Feenan said: "This project will benefit the diocese by providing funds to assist with debt repayment and to continue the ongoing pastoral works of the Bishop for the well-being of the community."
