NSW Premier Supports Youth Initiative to "Rock Against Racism"
On Sunday 25 May, approximately 300 young people from throughout the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter and Manning regions will gather at the Bay Bush Barn (Warners Bay) to consider the age-old problem of racism - a particularly pertinent issue in Australian society.

In 1995 the Australian Catholic Bishops conducted a national consultation with young people in which racism emerged as the most significant issue.

With this in mind, the Catholic Diocesan Youth Commission's major event for 1997 aims to highlight the challenges presented by racism.

"Rock Against Racism" has received overwhelming community support. It has also attracted over $5,000 in sponsorship from Catholic groups and community representatives as well as a grant from the NSW Premier, Mr Bob Carr.

During the day speakers from a variety of ethnic backgrounds will share their experiences of and thoughts about racism. Anglican Bishop Roger Herft will bring a gospel perspective to the topic.

The Diocesan Youth Commission is also thrilled to announce that the highly acclaimed Indigenous musicians Archie Roach and his band, as well as local group "TONCHI" will "Rock Against Racism" on the day. Through their poignant lyrics and expressive melodies they share their stories and spirituality.

The day will culminate in a liturgical service in which participants can consider their personal responses to the day's themes.

"Rock Against Racism" will take place on Sunday May 25 from 10am to 4pm at the Bay Bush Barn Warners Bay. Tickets are $12 and bookings can be made by contacting Janene at the Diocesan Complex.
