Christians
to Gather in Preparation for Easter
On Sunday 16 March at 2pm Christians from Newcastle and the Hunter
will gather for the 32nd annual Ecumenical 'Way of the Cross'
walk at Lochinvar.
This Ecumenical event, now organised under the patronage of Bishop
Roger Herft (Anglican), Bishop Michael Malone (Catholic) and Mr
John Wakefield (Uniting), began as a local presentation of the
Way of the Cross in 1966. It was organised on what came to be
known as Calvary Hill, part of land owned by the Sisters of St
Joseph, adjacent to their convent at Lochinvar.
The 'Way of the Cross' is a very ancient Christian devotion and
traditionally celebrated in countless churches and open air venues
throughout the world, usually on the fifth Sunday in Lent in preparation
for Easter.
Prayers, Scripture readings and hymns punctuate the journey from
the Garden of Gethsemane, through trial, crucifixion, death and
resurrection as the worshippers move from station to station up
the hill.
This year if unsuitable weather makes an open air function impossible,
it will be held in St Mary's Anglican Church, Church Street, Maitland.
