STORY - "Outdoor challenge embraced."
By Tracey Edstein.
Archery, orienteering, quad biking and rock climbing are all elements of the Outdoor Challenge currently offered by Centacare's Job Placement, Employment and Training (JPET) programme in Newcastle . While this might sound like something of a holiday for those inclined towards such activities, in fact the name of another activity - “leap of faith” – is a more accurate indication of what is asked of participants.
Outdoor Challenge targets young men, aged 15-21, who are at risk due to various circumstances. A lack of education or support networks often exacerbates the situation.
The programme in its earlier form attracted the attention of the Newcastle Knights who selected the service as a recipient of fundraising late last year. They wanted to support young men at risk. This additional funding allowed the programme to encompass a greater variety of activities, including a two night camp at the Great Aussie Bush Camp, Tea Gardens. As well as physical activities, motivational speakers and input on leadership and decision making are included.
Rob Van Valen, who facilitates the Outdoor Challenge, has found it a rewarding experience. “These young men often miss out on the confidence and self esteem building activities from other resources due to dysfunctional families, poverty and troubled times at school. The difference in their attitudes and rapport with workers and other members of the group is quite noticeable after they attend these courses.”
A less physically demanding but perhaps for some, more challenging, component of the experience involves a dolphin cruise at Nelson Bay . This provides an opportunity for evaluation and reflection on the question, “Where to from here?” A photographic record serves as a reminder of the experience and also issues its own challenge.
Centacare is offering four “Outdoor Challenges” this year to enable as many young men as possible to benefit.
Participant Simon Holder was enthusiastic about the Outdoor Challenge, saying “It was a different experience, it gave us a new direction in life – and it was quite fun!” He recommends it to other potential candidates and looks forward to further opportunities.
