"Bishop Michael follows Papal example"
By Bev Hincks.
The fifth
annual dialogue between Bishops Michael Malone and Roger Herft
provided an audience of over 100 with an example of the growing
ecumenical spirit in this region.
The Anglican
Church of St Thomas at Cardiff provided the venue for open discussion
of some controversial topics which was exceedingly informative
and at times, humorous.
The bishops
responded in depth to written questions submitted prior to the
event, covering such diverse topics as the future possibility
of sharing buildings for worship and other activities, particularly
in new growth areas; HIV/AIDS, especially in Africa with a very
frank discussion in which both bishops shed light on the moral
code which governs sexual activity in this situation; the apparent
lack of support of clergy at events which promote formation; the
effect on both churches when women are ordained, and the new covenant
agreement signed in July by the heads of churches at the National
Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA) Forum in Adelaide.
It was stated
that the president of the NCCA, Professor James Haire of the Uniting
Church, has claimed that in no other country could such a unique
commitment be made between the churches. The chairmanship of Craig
Abbs ensured a high level of audience interest was maintained.
Donations to the Two Bishops Trust were possible en route to supper
which was provided by the parishioners of St Kevins Catholic
parish and the Anglican parish of St Thomas.
The two bishops
emphasised that it is how we work together that is important.
A highlight was provided by Bishop Michael at the conclusion of
the evening. Bishop Michael spoke about Pope Paul VI presenting
the Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Ramsey with his papal ring
on the latters first visit to Rome in 1966. He also referred
to Pope John Paul IIs 1996 gift of a gold pectoral cross
to Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey. He then spoke of his
1998 visit to Rome on the occasion of the Synod for Oceania when
the Pope gave each Australian bishop a pectoral cross. Bishop
Michael then presented this pectoral cross to Bishop Roger. This
was indeed a moving example of the leadership of the two bishops
in walking the path towards Christian unity.
Why not include
this annual event in your plans for 2005 and hear the responses
to written questions like those above as well as questions from
the floor? You may be surprised by what you hear.
