The Maitland-Newcastle Door of Mercy

The Door of Mercy for our diocese is the front door of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, located at 841 Hunter Street, Newcastle.

During the year, individuals and groups are invited to make a pilgrimage to the Cathedral, to enter the Holy Door and fulfil the conditions set out to gain a Plenary Indulgence. These include:

  • A heart well-disposed to the fruits of grace and the workings of the Holy Spirit
  • Prayer upon entering the cathedral which may include: the profession of faith; a prayer for the Pope and his intentions which could take the form of the Our Father; the prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee; an invocation to Jesus asking for mercy.

Fridays have been designated 'Pilgrimage of Mercy days' for the Cathedral. There is a Holy Hour from 11.00-11.55 during which the Sacrament of Penance is available. This is followed by Mass at 12.05pm.

Schools and parish groups are encouraged to take up this opportunity to make a pilgrimage to the Cathedral during this year. This may be an opportunity for parishes and schools to include as part of the preparation for the sacraments of Initiation. For the sake of orderly use of the Cathedral, and to avoid other activities that take place in the Cathedral, groups are asked to contact the Parish Office on 4979 1101 to book a pilgrimage to the Cathedral.
