A capacity crowd gathered at the Victor Peters Suite in Newcastle West to hear Fr Kelly speak about the challenges facing the Catholic Church in Australia in 2013.
"The present challenge...is an even more profound one than questioning the cultural relevance of Catholic Christianity. This time in the Church is a challenge to and a questioning of its credibility - moral and spiritual - and not just in Australia but North America and Europe also."
Fr Kelly, a primary school classmate of Bishop Bill, was happy to respond to questions from the audience and was generous in sharing elements of his personal story.
He addressed the abuse crisis in detail but ended on a hopeful note, "Whether we grow stronger and deeper in our faith through the shocks and traumas we experience, it is always God who has the initiative. And despite our obstinacy, that's what we wait for."
