It was a privilege to welcome Bishop Bill Wright to this celebration and to have our parish priest, Father Derek Garner, concelebrate Mass with the Bishop. This celebration also commemorated the centenary of the blessing and laying of the foundation stone of the present church at Summer Hill.
The congregation was made up of local community members and their extended families, along with interested visitors, filling the church to overflowing. Many of those present, being descendants of the early pioneers who, over 170 years ago, established this place of worship. Following the Mass, a light supper was shared outside on the site of the original slab/shingle church.
We were blessed with such beautiful weather and were left with an overwhelming sense of assurance that the faith of our ancestors is alive and strong in our community today. It is therefore with great anticipation that we look forward to officially celebrating the centenary of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Summer Hill, later on in 2013.
