The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference’s Communications office has developed aussiepopealarm.com - a new web application that will send a text message or email when the white smoke rises from the Vatican.

Fr Brian Lucas, General Secretary of the ACBC said this new website would give more people an opportunity to engage in this historically significant moment.

"While this website will only have a life of about a week, the historic moment of the election of a Pope, the first whose papacy will be announced not just by white smoke, newspapers and TV, but on social media portals like Twitter is quite extraordinary, and will mark a generation."

"It is my hope that beyond our engagement with Australian Catholics via this portal, we will be able to further engage them in the life of the Church, and use new mediums such as this to connect people with the message of Christ."

Free sign up to www.aussiepopealarm.com is available now, and simply requires a mobile number, email address or both. You can also become a fan of Aussie Pope Alarm on Facebook.
