On Thursday 10 October, the Diocesan Social Justice Council and CatholicCare Social Services Hunter-Manning will host a Mental Health Week Forum at the Victor Peters Suite in Newcastle.
The forum will feature a number of celebrated speakers who will help participants gain a better understanding of mental health issues. The guests include:
Roger Peters PhD is the Director of HEAS Consultant and Clinical Psychologists who have offices in Newcastle and Singleton. Roger has been a psychologist for over 30 years and in private practice since 1984. Roger has written several books including Police Under Pressure, which examines the psychological health of police, especially in respect to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Compassion Fatigue and burnout.
Liz Newton is an English ex-pat who has an honours degree in English Literature from the University of Warwick, England. Liz has worked in the field of Mental Health for more than 10 years - masterminding a continuing professional development calendar for mental health clinicians for nine years and as a Consumer Consultant with Hunter New England Local Health District.
Owen Craigie played first grade rugby league for the Newcastle Knights and won a grand final when he was 18 years old. Today he works for Mission Australia as a gambling counsellor, having finally overcome his addiction three years ago. Broken to the point where he contemplated suicide, Craigie turned to a psychologist and Gamblers Anonymous for help.
Tanya Russell is a registered psychologist and is the team leader of the counselling team at CatholicCare. Tanya likes to consider her approach to counselling as eclectic and will endeavour to match the person to the techniques best suited to their personality. Mindfulness is often a feature in Tanya’s counselling sessions and this will be the focus of her presentation.
