The project was commissioned by the Insights Team in direct response to requests from members of the community who attended Insights gatherings in recent years. The confronting DVD features Patricia Feenan, mother of deceased priest James Fletcher's victim, Daniel Feenan, and Bob O'Toole, who was sexually abused by a Marist Brother at school, speaking about their experiences, their treatment by the Church community and the impact of the abuse on their lives, to this day.
Guests were invited to the launch event because they are leaders in their communities - diocese, parish, school, agency, congregation. As MC Mary Ringstad explained, Insights made an agreement with Bob O'Toole and Patricia Feenan that the DVD would only be used with facilitated groups. While there is nothing gratuitous or unnecessarily explicit in the film, it does have the potential to disturb, and Insights takes seriously its responsibility to exercise due diligence in caring for the members of the community it encounters.
Some members of the media were invited to the launch and ABC Radio's Dan Cox compiled an audio package which includes interviews with Bishop Bill Wright and Patricia Feenan. This clip was broadcast on Jill Embersen's Mornings program on 1233 Radio Newcastle. You can listen to the full audio of the segment below:
