Following the announcement by Pope Benedict that he will retire on the 28th February, Bishop Bill appeared on ABC Radio to discuss the development. The Bishop expressed his surprise at the news, commenting that the Pope "seems to have pulled off a complete coup, kept it secret to the end."

As the head of the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, the Bishop also commended the actions of the leader of the Catholic Church, stating that the Pope's retirement "takes a little bit of imagination, it takes a certain humility. It's an admirable thing to do in some ways."
