Stepping Stones
A formation process for ministry with the sick, dying and bereaved

The sickness and death of a Christian is a significant event in the life of a parish community. It is for this reason that the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is offering Stepping Stones, a formation process for parishioners who work in association with their Parish Priest to minister with the sick, dying and bereaved.

Stepping Stones is an initiative of the Diocesan Faith Development and Liturgy Commissions. It is recommended for parishioners who are, or wish to become involved in:
caring or bereavement groups;
pastoral visits and other ministries with the sick, dying or bereaved;
assisting in the preparation of vigils, funerals and related rites; and
presiding at vigils, funerals and related rites should this need be identified.

Stepping Stones formation has three components:
1. 'We Grieve'
2. 'We Pray Together'
3. 'We Minister'

Ideally, Stepping Stones participants will be members of a parish or perhaps regional caring/bereavement team that works closely with their parish priest(s) or pastoral associate(s) during and after their period of formation. If parishes do not have an existing caring/bereavement team, the discernment process which has been mailed to every parish may be of assistance.
