Sisters of Mercy, Singleton (RSM)

Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin, 1831, to alleviate the social and spiritual ills of the time. Bishop James Murray invited Sisters of the Ennis Community to the Diocese of Maitland. Thus, on 31st August 1875 ten Sisters arrived in Singleton and commenced their works of mercy - education, care of orphans, visitation of the sick and elderly. Through ministries which have changed with the needs of the times, the Sisters have striven to know God's loving kindness in their own lives and to share it with others.

In 1981, the 17 congregations of the Sisters of Mercy, while retaining autonomy, combined in a new administrative structure to form the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia (ISMA).

In December 2011, 14 congregations of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia (ISMA), and the autonomous region of Papua New Guinea, combined to become the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea (ISMAPNG). Three of the original 17 congregations - Brisbane, North Sydney and Parramatta - remain independent congregations.
