Mater Hospital

Established in 1921 the Newcastle Mater Misericordiae Hospital is a 191 bed public teaching hospital owned and operated by the Sisters of Mercy, Singleton. The hospital is governed by a Board of Directors. The Mater is the region's major centre for cancer services, especially blood diseases, breast cancer and melanoma as well as being one of the Hunter's teaching hospitals.

Services include:
oncology (cancers)
clinical haematology (blood)
palliative care (care of the dying)
• drug and alcohol
• clinical pharmacology & toxicology (drugs and poisons)
• radiotherapy (x-ray treatment)
• general medicine
• general and specialised surgical including plastic surgery
• accident & emergency (24 hour service)
• hospice and palliative care
• liaison psychiatry
• critical care

On an average day at the Mater:
over 350 outpatients are treated
150 inpatients receive care at the hospital
28 patients are admitted, eight of them being discharged on the same day
