Adoption
Adoption involves the legal transfer of the custody and guardianship of a child to the adoptive parents. CatholicCare (formally Centacare) has been involved in adoption in the Newcastle and Hunter region since the 1960’s. We work with all three parties in the adoptive process – adoptees, birthparents and adoptive parents. Our highly trained and sensitive staff is available to provide assistance with any situation relating to adoption.

We can assist with such issues as:
pregnancy counselling and support;
assistance with arrangements for a child to be adopted;
post adoption information, counselling and support, search assistance, advocacy and mediation;
information and referral regarding how to adopt a child;
talks about adoption to relevant interest groups;
consultation re adoption for students and other interested workers or counsellors. Our service is available to:
• those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and considering adoption as a possible option for their baby;

• those parents feeling unable to cope with the continued parenting of a child and considering whether adoption might be in the best interests of their child;
• parents who have placed a child for adoption;
• parents who have adopted a child;
• adopted children, adolescents and adults;
• the extended family of someone who has been adopted;
• people wishing to adopt a child;
• other professional workers and students.

Long and Short Term Foster Care and Respite
CatholicCare has a range of services to assist children who are in long term foster care. We are contracted by the Department of Community Services to work with children who are Wards of the State, and are, therefore, in the care of people other than their families. CatholicCare staff regularly meet with the children, their carers and natural families and are able to assist with any issues as they arise.

Out of Home Care
CatholicCare is recognised by the Department of Community Services (DOCS) as a Supervised Access Provider. This service allows children in care to keep in touch with their families or significant others. Centacare’s Supervised Access Program aims to provide a quality and user friendly service to: Centacare’s Long Term Foster Care Program; DOCS Long Term Foster Care Program and DOCS Short Term Foster Care placements awaiting court proceedings.
