Sisters of St Joseph, Lochinvar (RSJ)

Founded by Fr Julian Tenison Woods and Blessed Mary MacKillop in 1872, the Sisters of St Joseph, Lochinvar ("Black") are one of the five autonomous congregations of the Australian-New Zealand Federation (established in 1968).

1884 saw the foundation of four Sisters of St Joseph in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. Bishop James Murray was anxious to obtain a community of Sisters whose Constitutions would allow them "to go to remote places where the priest did not reside." Branch convents and schools were opened in many parishes and as the needs changed the Sisters have become more active in the ministries of parish and pastoral care.
